Blur @ Sathyam, Chennai : India’s Finest Gaming Zone
With Blur, Sathyam Cinemas has bravely ventured into a sector which has largely been ignored in India : World Class Gaming Zones.So what does Blur offer you ? In two words. Almost Everything. Spread over 15,000 square feet at the Sathyam Complex itself, Blur will feature gaming on every conceivable platform, from PS3, XBox 360, Nintendo Wii ,PS2, PCs, Sony PSP , Nintendo DS , Arcades and fully loaded PCs. You can also choose to have a bite at the funky looking Blur cafe or show off your skills at the two lane bowling alley which is scheduled to open soon. Quite a handful of options, huh ? Well that is exactly what the team behind Blur has been aiming for. According to Rahul, the Experience Manager, Blur has been designed to to appeal to all age groups and all kinds of gamers from first timers, to novices to hard core. As a proof that the strategy is already succeeding he narrated the story of a 70 year old woman playing Wii at a recent part held at Blur
Going by the initial response, they have a winner in their hands. This is too surprising as Blur can piggyback on the enormous footfalls that Sathyam attracts. So in the “build and they shall come” strategy can already be assured that people will come. And according to Rahul, they are confident that once people experience the place they will keep coming back for more.
The Wii Zone – Level 5
The Wii Zone, which is India’s first features 6 Wiis equipped with 42“ Panasonic Plasma HD Displays and has the standard Wii Sports and other games like Top Spin. Boxing, Bowling and Tennis seemed to be the most popular games.

Everything looks great. Except two lanes bowling alley. That is too less. It should be at least 4-5. Queue in weekends might be long.
Well, it may be good if bowling enthusiast are also gaming enthusiast. They can enjoy gaming zone while waiting for bowling. So, may be more money for Blur.
This is what I call a complete post. The blur team should use this for marketing and customer communication.
I’m heading to Blur this weekend.
~ Ananth
Can’t wait to try this out…. stupid semester exams :(…. this just looks too promising… wel except for the bowling alleys… yeah there should be more than 2…. any ideas how much the arcade coins are?
I check out Blur. Played wii for the first time. Now I understand why Wii is such a big hit.
Wii Golf was fun. Boxing with partner is super fun.
Wii is truly a milestone in computing/gaming innovative journey.
~ Ananth
Blur retail will be selling Wii. Also jjmehta of mumbai also sells Wii. I want to get one.
OMG!!! This place seriously OWNS!!!! my dream is put up such place in Bangalore…
Hmmm. The set up is good for casual gamers. I’m a little skeptical about how gaming tournaments are gonna turn out… especially if it’s multiplayer team games on PCs. The way the computers are currently placed isn’t too good for 5 on 5 matches and if I’m not mistaken, those LCDs are Dells which usually have tons of “Input Lag”
I don’t know if Blur’s going to focus on “competitive” games like Counter-Strike, Warcraft, Dota and Quake though.
@Ashwath,
We feel that the Chennai public has been deprived of great games like Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and Company of Heroes in a multiplayer environment.
We would be narrowing our target audience down if we were to stress on games like CS and DOTA where skill disparity is a factor.
Benchmarking tests have revealed a maximum input lag of 50ms in worst possible conditions.The lag can be countered by altering graphic settings which the staff are qualified to do.
Precisely why we have a note on our user interface requesting customers to ask our staff to optimise the graphic settings for maximum experience.
Hi,
Fair enough. I completely agree that you would be narrowing down on your target audience if you were to stick to games like CS and DOTA… just wanted to know if you had plans to hold tourneys for them in the future.
However, I don’t agree about the input lag thing. I’m not talking about network or graphics lag… what I’m pointing out is actually an inherent flaw with many LCD monitors called input lag which by itself is actually a misnomer as technically, it really is output lag (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Output_lag)
This really hinders fast FPS games as your mouse movement feels like it’s lagging behind by a lot. Unfortunately, there’s no fix for this… the only way to get rid of it is by replacing the monitor with another model that has less input lag. What’s worse is that it’s a toss up. The LCD models with better image quality usually lag more… so you end up sacrificing either of the two unlike on CRTs. However, you guys seem to have zeroed in on your target audience and the current set up is definitely the better choice for them as eye candy is of high priority.
That being said, I think you guys are doing an amazing job here. Blur is in my opinion, a massive boost to the gaming scene in India. I came in the other day and I saw a very good mix of age, gender and inclination towards gaming. I wish you guys the very best and hope this evolves into something even better. The arcade section blew me away. Any chance of getting a Street Fighter 4 arcade machine in the future? :)
Also, if you people do hold tournaments for the more “hardcore” games, I’d definitely like to know. Do you guys have a website or some sort of mailing list? I’d even gladly help out in anyway I can as I have quite a bit of experience with the esports scene in this country. Thanks again for setting this place up. God knows we needed it.
Ashwath, their website is blur.in
Yes, Blur is a haven for casual gamers. But I’m also eager to see what they have to offer for the hardcore gamers.. Only time will tell..
Thanks for the link. TD, is that you? Anyway, if they get an SF4 arcade machine, I’ll have to quit my job and pitch a tent somewhere inside the place :D
haha yeah an SF4 machine could just ruin my college life… it would be awesome though….
Blur is probably what chennai really needs now… it opens up gaming to a lot of people who havent really had any idea till now… and it’s reasonably cheap too… lol i’m surprised I havent gone in yet. Been to sathyam twice this week but couldnt go. Think i’ll dedicate this sunday to it… :P
@Ashwath,
Hey dude,
We are trying to locate an all english version of SF4 at the moment.But we have been unable to do so.The moment we do,we will get it in.
Tekken 6 will be there in 3 months though!
@Ashwath,
Regarding tournaments:
Surely dude…
Just register yourself on the Blur.in website.
Cheers,
Rahul
Experience Manager,
BLUR
@Ashwath,
And concerning the input lag issue:
I play COD4 extensively on a daily basis(at least 3 to 4 hours) and manage to frag quite effectively :-)
Check it out the next time you’re at BLUR.
Cheers
nice article and really hope this is a huge success :D must make the trip to see this place from mumbai to chennai next year.Happy to hear your trying to get people to play things other than cs and dota at a gaming zone lol.
@ Ashwath from what I read and understood if the game supports the native resolution of the lcd then it cancels out most of the delay.
Also for the team 5v5 teamspeak wouldn’t be such a bad option :) we use it all the time don’t we and we are in different cities.
Hai blur team,
I want contact person and contact number of blur team in chennai- for a business opportunity.
thank you

@Rahul:
Hey, I’m a x360 gamer, and was wondering if we’re allowed to hotswap our hdds/mem cards with your machines to access our profiles… it’d be cool if we could.. any chance of it?
im kinda of a pool player… it would be gr8.. if a snooker parlour could be open.. as they r as popular as bowling n gaming…
its a nice idea to develop our city all the best for blur team
Just visited Blur! The place looks awesome :) Played on the Wii. Agree with Ananth that its ultra cool :)
Get the bowling alley ready soon! If the alley at Mayajaal is anything to judge by, its going to set your cash registers ringing all the time :)
The place looks awesome but the people over there behaved so cheap while hosting tournament. Visit http://www.philagaylesbiantheatrefest.org/2008/12/best-cod-4-tournament-ever.html

Vijai.

WOW! cant wait to try this out!!!…Sathyam has always been my favourite theatre in Chennai…best seats, cheap and huge quantity popcorn though damn difficult to get tickets!!!! Another reason now added…me am a PS3 guy so thats where i will be heading!!!
@Blur

great effort and may you all thrive in the days to come!!!
and hey why no publicity man? i havent seen anything much in the papers on tv other than the internet and by word-of-mouth…am sure there are enough crazy gamers out there in the city…
and dont miss out on catching the casual movie-goer…if you have not posted yet, you should defintely advertise near the ticket counters and hall entry’s…
dear freinds this is a great setup i realy liked it i hope you get the best out of it. i run a gaming zone myselp and i would love any king tips and trick of running gaming zone setup like yours
Wow!!!!!!! this place rocks. I’ll surely visit this place when I return from abroad. What is surprises me the most is the price. 60/HR is an affordable luxury for most middle class people, including non-IT, non-BPO crowd. I’m glad the pricing is designed to target general public too not just the hipster crowd.
At last Chennai got a true gaming zone! hope the games will be changed frequently. Try to have some games for kids too so that you can attract family crowd too, the most fun part will be the Wii zone. Will able to give good feedback after visiting blur.
In tamilnadu running Video Game Parlors are illegal as per knowledge
How did Satyam got license to setup Blur ?
this so called “BLUR” truly is so awesome.It’s cool,but it would be better with more games,not consoles!
i used to play in blur it was awsome.. but the only disadvantage is too much price in bowling… is not audiable for a middle class person…. pls bring the old price atleast…
I want to know the name of the CPU CABINET used in Blur @ Satyam Chennai . . . .
Its really cool and huge . . .
can anyone tell me pls . . . .
for PC:Where is Counter Strike, Warcraft, AoE. Whats the use of having 500gb HDD if you are not going to fill it up?
